Lean of God, Not Men - Lent 2020

That your faith should not be in the wisdom of man but in the power of God.
1 Corinthians 2:5

How easy is it to confuse our understanding of faith if we don’t have the proper teaching? For new believers, things can get confusing quickly.

I have witnessed many times over the years a new believer relying on the knowledge of man instead of seeking the truth themselves. When I hear a person discussing the Bible and they say, “Our pastor told us…” I see a red flag! I wonder if they took their pastor’s words blindly or if they took the lesson and looked to God and his Word for confirmation. Do they rely solely on the wisdom of man?

When I teach and minister to the homeless Native community, I know my words hold power. Many of those we work with are lost and looking for someone who can help them find a better path. Therefore, I understand and explain often, that I am just a messenger and encourage people to dig into their Bible and seek answers.

When it comes to knowing who God is, we must understand His words in order to gain an understanding of what faith means and what He wants for our lives. We know God uses pastors and teachers to assist Him in preparing those who are seeking the wisdom and knowledge of our Creator. But it is by faith we are blessed with spiritual eyes and spiritual ears to begin to understand personally who Jesus is and what He did for us on the cross.

It is through faith in Jesus we see the Kingdom of God. In John 3:3, Jesus replied, "Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again." By the power of the Holy Spirit, we are called to God, and by His power, we gain His wisdom. Man is only the messenger. He is to share the good news, lead the people to Jesus, and let the Holy Spirit complete the process. Our job is to believe and listen to God’s Word.

Heavenly Father, we ask in the name of Jesus that you would grant us your wisdom. Help us to discern the difference between the wisdom of man and your Godly wisdom. Bless us with spiritual eyes and ears to see and hear your goodness in all things. We know when we rely on you and look to you alone for answers, we will be filled with the love and truth of your wisdom and grace. As we grow in our faith, I pray you will fill our hearts with an abundance of Godly love for our brothers and sisters. Give us strength and courage to overcome the darkness of this world. I pray, in the name of Jesus, Amen.
